In the book titled “Zero to One: Notes on Startups, or How to Build the Future”, Peter Thiel, the co-founder of Paypal, argues that no competition represents the ideal business model, and he advises founders and entrepreneurs to always aim for a monopoly and to avoid competition.
According to him, every monopoly is unique, but they usually share some combination of the following characteristics:
- Proprietary Technology
- Network Effects
- Economies of Scale
- Branding
